Re-Stock London housing competition entry

The house as the new productive epicenter of the city The Shard as a Case Study: a new way to foster affordable living

2020

In the new post-pandemic reality, production systems are reset and the house surfaces as the new productive domain of the city. As the need for corporative space diminishes, the house becomes a dichotomous realm, a blend between private and public, between intimacy and formality.

As the world is over-taken by yet another pandemic, social and production dynamics are reset. The possibilities of a new production system are enabled by a data-driven society and a forceful demand imposed by a new state of isolation.

The Post-Pandemic Man is the result of an evolved data-driven society juxtaposed and mediated by a sanitized society. Fluidity of time and space defines the current data-driven society. One´s universe can be encapsulated in one screen and one room. At the same time, a sanitized society imposes self-isolation and a series of decontamination processes as the new normal. The combination of both gives rise to a dichotomic creature that must be autonomous, singular, and hermetic; but cannot survive without collaboration, plurality and interaction. The Post-Pandemic Man calls for spatial integration and isolation, for one’s multiplicity of roles and functions within one’s space.

What if, companies are called upon to contribute to the house affordability issue in the UK?

Work-place infrastructure and solutions are a major source of expenditure for companies, especially in competitive urban centers such as London. Within the new paradigm of the house as the productive epicenter of the city, companies can reestablish production dynamics and considerably reduce operational costs.

What if companies redirect investment previously target at work-place solutions to employee funds, helping finance employees’ housing needs and tackle the housing affordability crisis?

Worldwide, epidemics have deeply shaped the history and lifestyle of modern societies. As the current COVID-19 pandemic imposes self-isolation , the house becomes a multifunctional, living and production hub. Decontamination processes and spatial segregation are new requisites for appropriate living. Challenges related to isolation and mental health emerge as central themes. What are the new requirements for the 24-hour occupied, productive, post-pandemic home?

Going on the opposite direction of the small living discourse sponsored by real-estate developers; the post-pandemic house demands space generosity. As new functions are incorporated to the house, generous space becomes synonym of productivity, flexibility and freedom of choice, allowing functions to be segregated or combined as needed.
